Thiruvanaikaval temple tradition, life of Adi ShankaraShankara's Sri Chakra Earrings for Akilandeswari
From the tradition of the Thiruvanaikaval temple. Tradition says that Akilandeswari of Thiruvanaikaval was once in a very fierce form, so that devotees were afraid even to approach her shrine.
When Adi Shankara came there, he made two tatankas, earrings, to calm her fierceness. He set the Sri Chakra into them and placed them on the Mother. He also installed Ganesha in front of her shrine and Murugan behind it, for a mother who sees her children grows gentle.
From that day the Mother has blessed as a form of compassion, and those earrings still shine at her ears. Bhattar's words, that the Mother dwells in the Sri Chakra of nine triangles, connect with this temple tradition.
