Explanation

Verse 26 ended with 'nagaiyudaiththe'; this one begins with 'udaiththanai'. The whole verse is built on four verbs ending in '-ththanai': you broke, you created, you granted, you washed. Each is a great thing the Mother did for him.

The order fits too. First she breaks the chain of births; then she creates love; then she gives the chance to serve; last, she makes the heart wholly clean. Words are not enough to describe a grace that has done all this.

Skanda Purana, the story of Valmiki

Ratnakara the Robber Becomes Valmiki

From the Skanda Purana. Ratnakara robbed travellers on a forest road to support his family. One day the sage Narada passed that way, and Ratnakara stopped him too.

Narada asked calmly, 'Will your family share in the sin you commit? Go and ask them.' Ratnakara went home and asked. 'We share in what you earn,' they said, 'but not in your sin.' Those words broke something open in his heart.

He fell at Narada's feet, and Narada taught him the name of God. He chanted it and sat in penance, unmoving, until an anthill grew over him. Because he rose from the anthill (valmika), he became Valmiki, the first poet, who sang the Ramayana. It shows that the water of grace can wash even a heart full of dirt and give it a new birth.
