Explanation

The previous verse ended 'running to you'; this one begins 'to those who come for refuge'. The devotee comes running, and the Mother gives him the very heavens. Where does she stay after giving? As Saraswati with Brahma, as Lakshmi on Vishnu's chest, as Uma in Shiva's half.

In verse 20 Bhattar asked, 'Where do you dwell?' Here he answers: as the consort of the three gods, and as the lights of the lotus, the sun and the moon. One Shakti shines as three goddesses and as the light of nature.

Devi Mahatmya (Markandeya Purana), chapter 5

The Gods Sing 'Ya Devi' in the Himalaya

From the Devi Mahatmya. The asura brothers Shumbha and Nishumbha seized the worlds and offices of the gods. Driven out, the gods went to the Himalaya and sang to the Mother.

Their hymn is the famous 'Ya Devi sarvabhuteshu': salutations to the Goddess who dwells in all beings as understanding, as hunger, as sleep, as power, as patience, as beauty, as mother. As they sang, Parvati came there to bathe in the Ganga and asked, 'Whom are you praising?'

Then from her own body the radiant goddess Kaushiki came forth and said, 'They are praising me.' She fought for the gods and gave them back their worlds. Even after giving heaven to those who took refuge in her, she dwells quietly in all beings.
