Meaning

O lady of the shining forehead, who are part of Shiva, whose bow loosed the arrow that destroyed the three cities! To rule me there are your lotus feet. To bring me back from Yama there is the corner of your eye. If, with all this, my troubles still blaze up, the fault is mine, not yours.

Explanation

This is an honest verse. The Mother has given everything she has to give: her feet to rule him and her side-glance to protect him. If suffering still comes, Bhattar admits, the fault is his own. Devotion is not blaming God; it is looking at oneself.

Tradition explains Shiva's burning of the three cities as destroying the three impurities: ego, karma and illusion. The Mother, who is part of that Shiva, is able to destroy all three impurities in her devotee.

Shiva Purana, Rudra Samhita (the destruction of Tripura)

Shiva Burns the Three Cities with a Smile

From the Shiva Purana. The three sons of the demon Taraka performed fierce penance and received three flying cities of gold, silver and iron. By their boon, the cities could be destroyed only by a single arrow at the moment, once in a thousand years, when all three came into one line. They tormented the worlds.

The gods built Shiva a great chariot: the earth was the chariot, the sun and moon its wheels, Mount Meru the bow, the serpent Vasuki the string and Vishnu the arrow. The moment came when the three cities stood in one line.

But before Shiva loosed the arrow, He smiled. In the fire of that smile the three cities burned to ash, and all the gods' great preparations were not needed. Bhattar says the same thing: there is no shortage of grace; what blocks it is our own ego.

To reflect on

Today, before blaming someone else for a problem, pause and ask what your own part in it was.
