Explanation

Verse 40 ended 'merit done before'; this verse begins in delight, 'we have earned merit!' Bhattar turns and speaks to his own mind: 'O mind, what a blessing is ours!'

Three things happened: the Lord and the Goddess came for our sake; they seated us among the devotees; they placed their feet on our heads. It is not that we went to the temple; they came to us. That is the wonder.

Periya Puranam, the life of Siruthondar

The Lord and the Goddess Come to Siruthondar's Home

From Sekkizhar's Periya Puranam. At Thiruchenkattankudi lived a devotee named Siruthondar, who would never eat before he had fed a devotee of Shiva. To test his love, Shiva came as a fierce Bhairava ascetic and asked for a most terrible meal.

Though their hearts were shaken, Siruthondar and his wife Thiruvenkattu Nangai would not refuse a devotee, and they prepared it. When the ascetic sat down to eat, he said, 'Call your son Seeralan too.' When the mother called, the boy came running, alive. The ascetic vanished.

Then in the sky Shiva appeared with Uma and Murugan and took the whole family with them. The Lord and the Goddess came to the devotee's very home. This is the grace Bhattar rejoices in when he says 'they came here for our sake'.
