Explanation

In verse 17 Bhattar told how the Mother won Shiva's heart. Here are the weapons of that victory: red lips and a white smile. Not arrows or swords, but beauty and love. They made even Shiva, who burned Kama, yield.

Then Bhattar turns to us: 'Bow to her, all of you!' For the first time he calls on others. Ruling Amaravati means holding Indra's place; but the book's larger message is that the chance to bow to her is greater still.

Devi Bhagavata Purana, Book 6

Shachi's Worship Restores Indra

From the Devi Bhagavata Purana. Burdened by the sin of killing Vritra, Indra left his throne and hid inside a lotus stalk. The gods made King Nahusha Indra in his place. Proud with power, Nahusha wanted to take Shachi, Indra's queen, as his wife.

Distressed, Shachi went to Brihaspati, teacher of the gods, who taught her to worship the Mother Bhuvaneshvari. When Shachi worshipped with a melting heart, the Mother appeared, guided her to where Indra was hiding and told her how to bring him back.

Later Nahusha made the sages carry his palanquin and insulted Agastya, and was cursed to become a serpent. Indra became king of Amaravati again. Bhattar's words, 'Bow to her, and you will rule Amaravati', come true in this story.
