Meaning

When Shankara caressed you and wore your lotus feet upon his head, where did the fire in his hand and the river on his head hide? O young flower-cuckoo, who never knows how to enter the false hearts of the cunning, but only hearts filled with truth!

Explanation

The previous verse ended 'the Lady' (thaiyalaiye); this begins 'caressing' (thaivandhu). The first two lines are a sweet tease: when Shiva placed the Mother's feet on his head to soothe her in a lovers' quarrel, where did the fire in his hand and the Ganga on his head go? Before the Mother, all of the Lord's grandeur disappears.

The last two lines speak a deep truth: the Mother will not enter a false heart; she comes only into a truthful one. She is a 'young flower-cuckoo': the cuckoo sings only where it is sweet.

Shiva Purana and Puranic tradition (the story of Bhasmasura)

Bhasmasura, Undone by His Own False Heart

From Puranic tradition. A demon named Vrikasura did fierce penance to Shiva. The ever-gracious Shiva appeared before him, and the demon asked for a boon: 'Whoever's head I place my hand on must turn to ash.' Shiva granted it, and he became Bhasmasura.

But there was deceit in his heart. He wanted to possess Mother Parvati, and so he ran to place his hand on Shiva's own head. Shiva withdrew. Then Vishnu came in the form of Mohini and invited Bhasmasura to dance. He copied every movement she made. At one point Mohini placed her hand on her own head, and he did the same. At that instant he turned to ash.

The one who tried to reach the Mother with a false heart was destroyed by his own deceit. The Mother, 'who never knows how to enter the false hearts of the cunning', dwells only in truthful hearts.
