Abirami Andhadhi 93 ·

Nakaiyae ithu, intha njaalam ellaam petra naayakikku, / Mukaiyae mukizh mulai, maanae, muthu kan mutivuyil, antha / Vakaiyae piraviyum, vampae, malaimakal enpathum naam, / Mikaiyae ivalthan thakaimaiyai naati virumpuvathae.

Meaning

For the Lady who gave birth to this whole world, to speak of her breasts as buds, to call her a doe, to say she sleeps at the end of the age, to speak of her being born in such a way, and to call her the mountain's daughter: all this is laughable, mere empty words. For us to seek out and yearn to know her greatness is to overreach.

Explanation

The previous verse ended 'budding smile' (mugizh nagaiye); this begins 'laughable' (nagaiye). There 'nagai' meant a smile; here it means something to laugh at. It is a lovely turn of the andhadhi.

Having praised the Mother through so many images over ninety-two verses, Bhattar suddenly stops and laughs: 'For her who bore the whole world, words like bud, doe and mountain's daughter are all too small!' It is the poet's humility. He admits that it is impossible to speak of the boundless in words that have limits.

Bhagavata Purana, Book 10

Yashoda Sees the Universe in Krishna's Mouth

From the Bhagavata Purana. Little Krishna was playing in Gokula. Balarama and his friends told Yashoda that he had eaten mud. Yashoda caught hold of him and said, 'Open your mouth!' 'I didn't eat any mud, Mother,' said Krishna, and opened his mouth.

What Yashoda saw inside that little mouth was not mud. The whole universe was there: the sky, the directions, mountains, oceans, the sun, the moon, the stars, Gokula, and in it herself and Krishna. She trembled in wonder. 'Who is he? Who am I?' her mind cried. Then Krishna, by his maya, filled her heart again with a mother's love. She forgot what she had seen, picked him up, set him on her lap and cuddled him.

He who holds the universe within himself appeared as a small child. Bhattar's words, that small terms like bud, doe and mountain's daughter are laughable for 'the Lady who gave birth to the whole world', carry the same wonder.
