The life of Kumaraguruparar and the Sakalakalavalli Malai traditionKumaraguruparar Sings to the Goddess of All Arts in Kashi
From the tradition of Kumaraguruparar's life. Born at Srivaikuntam in the seventeenth century, Kumaraguruparar could not speak until he was five. By the grace of Murugan at Thiruchendur he gained speech and became a great poet. Later he went to Kashi to spread the Shaiva path.
To found a math in Kashi he needed permission from the ruler of that land, but he did not know the language the ruler spoke. He sang ten verses to Saraswati, the Sakalakalavalli Malai, beginning 'Is it not only the white lotus that bears your feet?' Tradition says that by the Mother's grace he gained the power to speak fluently in that very language. The astonished ruler granted land for the math, which still stands in Kashi today.
The one who worshipped the Mother of all arts as much as he was able was honoured even in a foreign court. 'Those who worship the peacock of all arts as much as they are able will become lords of the seven worlds.'
