Meaning

If the devotees who worship her with love find their eyes overflowing with tears, their bodies thrilling with goosebumps, themselves becoming overflowing bliss, losing all sense of themselves, rejoicing as if tasting sugarcane, stumbling in their speech, and becoming blessed madmen who receive every good thing spoken of before, then the way of Abirami is good indeed.

Explanation

The previous verse ended 'to yearn' (virumbuvadhe); this begins 'who worship with love' (virumbi). Bhattar lists the bodily signs of devotion: tears, goosebumps, bliss, self-forgetting, delight, stumbling speech.

The townspeople had mocked Bhattar himself as a madman. Here he takes that very word as a badge of honour: if such madness comes, then the Mother's way is good! Just as Sundarar called Shiva himself 'O madman', the madness of love for God is not worldly madness; it is supreme bliss.

The life of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (Chaitanya Charitamrita of Krishnadasa Kaviraja)

Chaitanya Faints at the Sight of Jagannatha

From Krishnadasa Kaviraja's Chaitanya Charitamrita. Chaitanya, born at Navadvipa in Bengal, was a great scholar. But once he tasted the sweetness of the divine name, grammar and logic seemed small to him. He took sannyasa and went to Puri in Odisha.

When he entered the Puri temple and saw the form of Jagannatha, tears poured from his eyes like a waterfall. His whole body broke into goosebumps; his speech stumbled; he ran forward to embrace the Lord and fell to the ground unconscious. The temple guards thought he was a madman. But the court scholar Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya watched him and realised that this was not madness but the height of divine love. Later he himself became Chaitanya's follower.

Tears, goosebumps, stumbling speech, self-forgetting: every sign of the devotee that Bhattar sings of was seen in Chaitanya. The world called him mad; he was in supreme bliss.
