From the Valmiki Ramayana (Aranya Kanda)Rama's Debt to Jatayu
From the Valmiki Ramayana. As Ravana carried Sita away through the sky, the old vulture king Jatayu, friend of Dasharatha, heard her cries. "I will not abandon my friend's daughter-in-law," he said, and heedless of his age, he fought Ravana fiercely.
He smashed Ravana's chariot and killed the charioteer. But in the end Ravana cut off Jatayu's wings with his sword. Jatayu fell to the ground, and Ravana went on with Sita.
Searching for Sita, Rama and Lakshmana found Jatayu lying in his blood. Gasping, Jatayu told them, "Ravana has carried Sita off to the south," and then breathed his last.
Rama was heartbroken. "He was like a father to me, and he gave his life for me," he said, and he performed Jatayu's funeral rites himself, as a son does for his father. He lit the pyre, offered water at the Godavari, and prayed that Jatayu would reach the highest worlds.
Rama, who could not perform his own father's last rites with his own hands, performed them for a bird who gave his life for him. It is a moving form of the line: living in grateful remembrance of kindness received is very sweet.
