Explanation

The zeal to act in ways the community will not resent is very sweet; progress must not come at the cost of harming others. The second is persevering effort that never sinks into idleness. In his chapter on freedom from sloth, Valluvar says idleness ruins a whole family, and 'thaalaanmai' means that effort is true manhood.

The third is great kings who stand unwavering in the confusion of fierce battle and hold back the enemy host: the steadfastness of those who guard the land.

Today every person's challenges are their battlefield. Moving forward without sinking into confusion or idleness, and without harming others, is what this verse means.

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Sundara Kanda)

Hanuman Declines to Rest

From the Valmiki Ramayana. To search for Sita, Hanuman leapt from Mount Mahendra to cross the ocean, a hundred yojanas wide. So great was his speed that trees were torn up by the roots and followed him a little way.

In the middle of the ocean, at the request of the Ocean, who owed a debt of gratitude to Rama's ancestors the Sagaras, the mountain Mainaka rose from the water. "Messenger of Rama, rest on me awhile," Mainaka said kindly. "Eat fruit, ease your weariness, and then go on."

Hanuman touched the mountain gently with his hand and thanked it: "Your kindness is feast enough. But I have vowed not to stop anywhere until Rama's work is done." And he flew on.

On the way Surasa tested him and Simhika tried to stop him. Overcoming each obstacle by wit and strength, Hanuman reached the shore of Lanka.

Hanuman, who declined rest even when it was offered with love and held firm to his task, is the very form of persevering effort that never sinks into idleness.
