From the Mahabharata (Udyoga Parva)Vidura's Night of Counsel
From the Mahabharata. The night after Sanjaya returned from his embassy to the Pandavas, Dhritarashtra could not sleep. Worried that war would come and what would befall his sons, he called his brother Vidura and said, "My mind is burning. Tell me what is good."
All that night Vidura gave him counsel, which is known as the Vidura Niti. "The wise begin only after reflection, and do not abandon what they have begun. Anger, pride and greed ruin judgment. One who betrays a trusting person is a great sinner. Unity in a family is strength: logs burning apart only smoke, but burning together they blaze," he explained, with many such images.
At last he said plainly: "Brother, give the Pandavas their due. If you follow your son Duryodhana's path, the whole clan will perish." Vidura did not flatter; he spoke the bitter truth.
Dhritarashtra knew the counsel was true, but out of love for his son he did not follow it. The result was Kurukshetra.
Counsel from those who know all sides is sweet, and this story teaches that hearing it is not enough: it must also be followed.
