Explanation

Worship God every day, says Avvaiyar. Worship is not only for festivals; it is part of daily life. Remembering God as the day begins and ends gives the mind its direction.

Worship needs no grand ritual. Even a small act of reverence offered with love reaches God.

Periya Puranam, life of Kannappa Nayanar

Kannappa's Daily Worship

From the Periya Puranam. Thinnan, a young hunter, found a Shiva lingam on the hill of Kalahasti and melted with love. He knew no mantras or rituals. Every day he brought water in his mouth to bathe the lingam, wore flowers in his hair to offer it, and offered meat from his hunt, tasting it first to make sure it was good.

One day blood flowed from the lingam's eye. In alarm, Thinnan dug out his own eye with an arrow and pressed it onto the lingam, and the bleeding stopped. Then the other eye began to bleed. Placing his toe on that eye to mark the spot, he began to dig out his second eye.

Then the Lord called out three times, 'Stop, Kannappa!' and held him back. In six days of daily worship he attained what many do not attain in a lifetime.
