Valmiki Ramayana, Sundara KandaHanuman's Leap Across the Sea
From the Valmiki Ramayana, Sundara Kanda. Hanuman leapt from the Mahendra mountain to cross the sea. On the way, the mountain Mainaka rose from the waters and kindly invited him to rest awhile. Hanuman touched it in thanks and said, 'There is no rest until Rama's work is done,' and flew on.
Then Surasa, mother of serpents, blocked his way to test him, and Hanuman passed her by his wits. He struck down Simhika, the demoness who seized flyers by their shadows. Overcoming every obstacle, he reached the shore of Lanka.
Neither an invitation to rest, nor threats, nor danger stopped him. His zeal was the foundation of the success of Rama's mission.
