Mahabharata, Vana ParvaArjuna and the Hunter
From the Mahabharata, Vana Parva. During the exile, Arjuna realised he would need divine weapons for the coming war, and went to the Himalayas to do fierce penance to Shiva. He asked no one for help; he sought to earn them through his own austerity.
One day a wild boar charged at him. Arjuna and a hunter shot it at the same moment. Each claimed the kill, and they fought. Arjuna's arrows ran out, his bow was taken from him, and even fighting with bare hands he was defeated.
Then Arjuna realised the hunter was Shiva himself, and bowed. Pleased with his valour and penance, Shiva granted him the Pashupata weapon. What Arjuna won by effort and courage, not by begging, became his rightful strength.
