Mahabharata, Shanti ParvaThe Sages Likhita and Shankha
From the Mahabharata, Shanti Parva. Two sage brothers, Shankha and Likhita, lived in separate hermitages. One day Likhita came to his elder brother's hermitage while Shankha was away. Being hungry, he picked a few fruits from a tree there and ate them.
When Shankha returned, he said, 'Taking without permission is theft. Go to the king and receive your punishment.' Likhita went at once to King Sudyumna, confessed and asked to be punished. Though the king offered to pardon him, he insisted, and his hands were cut off as the penalty for theft.
Later, at his brother's word, he bathed in the river and his hands grew back. Their greatness was a heart so pure that it counted even a few fruits as theft.
