Explanation

In this verse the heroine complains to Kama. Kama is the god of love, one who strikes hearts with flower arrows. He should strike both equally. But she complains that he struck only the heroine and left the hero unstruck. "Oruvar kan nindru ozhukuvaan" means he stays upon one alone and torments her.

In "kaanaan kol" there is a question about Kama's regard. Does he not see the result of his act, the sorrow she suffers? If he had seen, he would have pitied her. This is an appeal to the divine. It is natural for humans in sorrow to question God or fate.

Here Kama is not only a character; he is a symbol of the heroine's expectation about the justice of love. That love should strike both is just. Striking only one is injustice. In this way Valluvar speaks of justice even in love.

In our lives too there is a state in which only one in a relationship feels more and suffers. We should look at such persons with compassion. Their feeling is not their fault; they bear only the weight of their love. The interrogative kol in the Kural shows both doubt and wonder about Kama's regard.

A story

Usha's Dream Love

In the tenth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana comes the story of Usha and Aniruddha. Usha was the daughter of the asura king Banasura. One night in a dream she saw a handsome youth. She fell in love with him. When the dream faded, she was in distress not knowing where he was. "My beloved, where are you?" she cried.

That youth did not know her at all. He was Aniruddha, grandson of Krishna, living his life at Dwaraka. Usha's one-sided love wasted her. She forgot food and sleep. Her friend Chitralekha, knowing her state, asked the cause. Usha described her dream.

Chitralekha, with her skill in painting, found out who had come in the dream. She drew the portraits of many and, from Usha's identification, recognised Aniruddha. Then by her magic power she brought him from Dwaraka to Usha's palace.

In the first part of the story Usha's love was one-sided. Kama's arrow had pierced her; but Aniruddha did not know her. As the Kural heroine complains, "Kama stays upon one alone," Usha too may have languished in solitude. Later Aniruddha saw her and loved her; the love of both became equal.

Banasura learnt of this and imprisoned Aniruddha. At last Krishna and Balarama came and fought, and with Shiva's grace peace was made. The two married, says the Bhagavata.

The character of Chitralekha shows the excellence of friendship. The friend who uses her skill to help a friend in distress shines in this tale.

One-sided love blooming as love on both sides is the sweet ending of this tale.
