The Solitary Anguish

This chapter compares the pain of one-sided love with the joy of mutual love, and speaks of the lonely anguish of a heroine who feels that her love is not equally returned by the one she loves.

Introduction

In Thanippatar Mikudhi, thanippatar is the sorrow suffered by one alone, and mikudhi is its increase. So the name means "the increase of a sorrow suffered alone." It is the tenth chapter in the Karpiyal of the book of love. In previous chapters many aspects of separation were told. Here another angle comes: the doubt that the hero does not love her as much as she loves him. The loneliness given by a love that is not equal on both sides is the centre of this chapter.

The opening verses praise the love in which both love alike. It is a sweet fruit without a stone; a grace like the rain the sky pours; the pride that makes life worth living. So the first three verses, having told the excellence of equal love, are followed by verses showing the sorrow of its absence. This order is built like a drama: first the state that should be, then the state that is not.

In the middle part comes one of the finest verses. If a kavadi pole has equal weight on both sides, the load is sweet; if only one side is heavy it afflicts. Love is so, says Valluvar. In the closing part the heroine addresses Kama, "You stand upon only one"; she longs for a kind word from her beloved; and she ends humorously, addressing her own heart, "To tell your grief to one who does not love you is like trying to dry up the sea."

This chapter is a profound reflection on the balance of love. It is natural to expect that our loving and being loved should be of the same measure. When it is not obtained, Valluvar does not hide the pain. Yet in the heroine's voice there is no bitterness; there is a tenderness mingled with longing and humour.

In today's relationships too this balance is very important. In friendship, family and love, a relationship in which only one makes effort becomes a burden. When both share equally the relationship becomes sweet. This chapter urges us to assess our relationships and to be grateful to those who love us.

Chapter story

The Mango of Karaikkal Ammaiyar

The Periya Puranam tells the life of Karaikkal Ammaiyar. Punitavati, born in a merchant family at Karaikkal, was excellent in devotion to Shiva. She married Paramadattan, son of the merchant Dhanadattan. One day Paramadattan sent two mangoes to his house. Punitavati kept them carefully.

That day a Shaiva devotee came to the house hungry. With the cooking not yet complete, Punitavati gave him one mango and fed him. Later when her husband came and ate, she served the other mango. It was very sweet. He asked for another mango too. Not knowing what to do, Punitavati prayed to the Lord. A mango appeared in her hand, the Purana says. She gave it to him. It was sweeter than before. When Paramadattan asked where the mango came from, she told the truth.

Paramadattan did not believe it. He asked for another mango. She prayed to the Lord and again received a mango; but it vanished in his hand. Frightened, Paramadattan took her to be one with divine power and withdrew. Later he went across the sea for trade, married someone else there and lived, says the Purana.

When he returned he fell before Punitavati and worshipped. She did not want his love; she felt her duty was done. "I no longer want this beauty; grant me a ghostly form," she prayed to the Lord. The Lord gave her the ghostly form. She became "Karaikkal Ammaiyar."

In this story, when worldly love became one-sided, all her love turned toward the Lord. The Lord returned her love equally. She walked on her head to Mount Kailasa; the Lord called her "Ammaiye" and accepted her as his mother, tradition says. At Tiruvalangadu she received the boon of being always beneath the Lord's cosmic dance.

Karaikkal Ammaiyar's compositions include Arputha Tiruvandadi, Tiruviraṭṭai Manimalai and the Mutta Tirupadigams. They are counted among the earliest works of Tamil devotional literature. Simplicity and depth are together in her songs. In them she shows that her love toward the Lord is not one-sided but love fitted on both sides.

At the start of this story Punitavati stands misunderstood by her husband. What she did was the virtue of feeding a devotee. But to the husband it was not acceptable. A gap arises in which the same love cannot be shared. That gap is akin to the loneliness the Kural heroine feels.

Even Paramadattan's worship of her, the Purana shows, was out of fear and respect, not love. She realised that was not enough. Where there is no equal love, even respect becomes empty. Her resolve was born from that emptiness.

In telling this story one need not say her decision is a model for everyone; it is a devotee's own path. But the deep message we take from it: when love does not return equally in its natural form, its energy can be directed in a higher direction rather than destroyed.

Her songs are honoured as among the first devotional songs of Tamil. The depth of the story is that the pain of one-sided love turned into devotion and received an equal love in reply.

Key lessons

  • Equal love is the sweet fruit; one-sided love becomes a burden.
  • In a relationship both must contribute equally.
  • Gratitude to those who love us is the basis of love.
  • When love is not returned, its energy can be turned to a higher purpose.
  • One should grow the maturity to console oneself rather than tell sorrow to one who cannot understand it.
