Explanation

In this verse the purity of the heroine's love shows. Even if he does not show love to us, news about him, his name, even praise of him sounds sweet to her. The word isai denotes fame and news. Sevikku iniya means sweet to the ear.

This verse is worth reading together with the previous one. There the cruelty of a state with no kind word was spoken of. Here the longing that even a small piece of news would be sweet is spoken of. That news about the one who caused her sorrow is itself her comfort shows the strange nature of love.

There is no hatred in the heroine's voice here. By saying "even if he does not show grace" she accepts his act. Loving is her nature; it does not depend on whether it is returned. In a way this is a form of selfless love.

In our lives it is natural to rejoice when someone speaks well of one we love. Even if love does not come directly from him, news that he is well is comfort to us. Sharing such news is also a good deed. The word nasaiiyaar denotes those who desire. Because what the heroine desires is love, even his name is sweet to her.

A story

Hanuman's Sweet Words in the Ashoka Grove

In the Sundara Kanda, Hanuman entered Lanka and found Sita in the Ashoka grove. Seated on a tree, he looked down at Sita. Because of the rakshasis' guard he did not go directly to her. Valmiki shows that Sita at that time was in a mood to end her life.

Hanuman began to sing the story of Rama in a soft voice. He told in simple sweet words about the lineage of Dasharatha, Rama's exile and the loss of Sita. Those kind words fell on Sita's ears. At first she did not believe it; she doubted whether it was a dream or a trick of Ravana. But the sweetness of the words touched her heart.

Hanuman came down from the tree and bowed to her. He gave her the ring Rama had sent. When Sita took it in her hand she rejoiced as though she saw her husband himself. In effect she said to Hanuman, "Your words are nectar to my ears."

This scene gives life to the phrase "sweet to the ear" in the Kural. It shows how even a small message from the beloved acts as medicine for a grieving heart. The days Sita reproached herself for her hard-heartedness ended with that kind word.

The ring sent by Rama became the token that Hanuman's embassy was true. Token and kind word together created faith. For a message to be credible, love and truth must join.

Hanuman is the high ideal of a messenger. He had the skill to carry the message accurately and tell it in a consoling manner. We too, when carrying news to others, should tell it with love and attention.
