Explanation

The verse begins by asking what consultation is for. Careful discussion and listening are a road, and the road leads to a decision. However long a group talks, if no resolve is born, the talk has been wasted. So Valluvar says the end of deliberation is to reach a firm decision.

The second line shows the other side. To stand still after the decision, saying 'let us look a little longer', is a subtle fault. It looks like caution, but it is often fear in another form. While we linger, circumstances change, openings close and rivals get ready. The phrase translated as 'lingering in delay' suggests a person who has made his home in postponement.

In everyday life this is a lesson we badly need. Many people plan a venture for years and let the day of decision slip away. Others collect so many opinions that their minds become clouded. A mark of wisdom is to know which time is for study and which time is for acting. This does not mean hurry. It means that once a decision has been firmly made, we honour it and move forward. Good leaders hear everyone in the meeting, but when it ends they say plainly, 'This is what we shall do.' The group's task is to make things clear; the leader's task is to turn that clarity into action. To raise fresh doubts after resolve has formed also shakes the trust of others.

A story

Arjuna's Resolve

From the Mahabharata. On the field of Kurukshetra the two armies stand facing each other. Arjuna, in his chariot, sees kinsmen, teachers and friends on both sides. His body trembles and the bow slips from his hand. 'I will not fight,' he says, and sinks down on the floor of the chariot. All the councils before the war are over; the peace embassies have gone. This is no time for more deliberation.

His charioteer Krishna speaks to him, in the Bhagavad Gita, of duty, action and non-attachment. Arjuna asks his questions and gains clarity step by step. At the end he says: 'My delusion is destroyed. By your grace I have regained my memory. My doubts are gone and I stand firm; I shall do as you say.' With those words he takes up the Gandiva.

There are two scenes here. The first is the time for examination. Arjuna did not hide his doubts, and Krishna answered them patiently. The second is the time for resolve. Once clarity came, Arjuna did not keep saying, 'Let me think a little more.' He did not turn back to his doubts; he stayed within his decision.

We can see the same thing in daily life. A student who has settled the syllabus but keeps buying new books will never begin to study. A shopkeeper who has decided to open a shop but postpones it for months will see the opportunity slip away. Delay after the questions are answered is worse than confusion before them. When Arjuna's sigh faded, the twang of the Gandiva's string rose over the field.

To reflect on

Is there something you have already examined and decided, yet keep postponing under the name of 'still thinking'? What is really behind that delay?
