Explanation

Two kinds of teachers are hinted at in this verse. One is the practitioner, who has done the work with his own hands. The other is the sage who knows the inner subtlety of the work. Some commentators separate the two, saying that from the first we learn the handwork and from the second the inner meaning. Others take both phrases to refer to one person. In either reading the advice is clear: rather than fumbling through an unknown task by ourselves, it is better to learn from those who have mastered it.

There are two reasons. First, time is saved. What a person learned over many years of mistakes, we may learn in a few days. Second, loss is avoided. The mistakes of a first attempt often destroy wealth and trust.

The phrase 'to grasp the mind' matters. It asks us to watch not only the words of the teacher but also his temper and approach. In the way a master sculptor approaches stone, or a great physician looks at a patient, there is wisdom that is not written in any book. When we start a new job or a business today, asking humbly from those who have gone ahead is the practical form of this verse.

A story

Rama and Lakshmana with Vishvamitra

From the Bala Kanda of the Ramayana. The sage Vishvamitra came to King Dasharatha of Ayodhya and asked that Rama and Lakshmana be sent to guard his sacrifice. Rama was then a youth, brought up in the comforts of the palace. But he knew that fighting demons to protect a sacrifice would be no easy task. With his father's permission the two brothers set out with the sage.

On the bank of the Sarayu the sage first taught them two mantras called Bala and Atibala, which the Ramayana says keep off hunger, thirst and weariness. As they walked through the forest he told them the histories of places, the story of the Ganga's birth and the lives of many rishis. Rama listened carefully to each.

When they met the demoness Tataka, Rama hesitated. He asked whether it was right to kill a woman. The sage explained her cruelties and the suffering she caused and spoke of a king's duty. Guided by him, Rama became clear and acted. Later the sage taught him many divine weapons.

At Siddhashrama the sacrifice went on for six days, and for all those days the brothers kept watch without sleeping. When the demons Maricha and Subahu attacked, Rama used exactly what he had learned: he struck Subahu down and hurled Maricha far away. The sacrifice was completed without hindrance.

Though a prince, Rama took his teacher's word with a whole heart. Without any pride in what he knew already, he learned humbly from one who knew. That humility became the ground of the victories he later won. To learn from the proficient before entering the work is the first step on the long road to success.

To reflect on

Who is the master of the work you are about to begin? What stops you from asking and learning from him: hesitation or pride?
