Explanation

This verse stresses the inner qualifications of an envoy. Purity means not taking bribes, not coveting others' wealth, and honesty without hidden motives. While abroad, an envoy may be approached by many temptations, and his purity lies in not being bought. The second is helpfulness: being a firm support to his state, a loyalty that does not abandon his country in a difficult moment but works for its welfare. The third is courage: the strength to state the truth without fear.

Truthfulness joins the three. 'Delivering the message along the path of truth' means giving the message in the way of truth. Some may think that to be an envoy is to lie and be cunning, but Valluvar does not accept this. A lie may succeed once but costs trust. When a man of purity and courage tells the truth, its weight is greater.

Some commentators take the word for helpfulness to mean a companion who aids the success of the mission, or a supporting skill in speech. In any case, the combination of purity, usefulness and courage is needed in any responsibility in our lives. A manager, a representative, or anyone who goes to speak on behalf of a friend must guard his purity.

A story

Sanjaya's Truthfulness

From the Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata. After the Pandavas had completed thirteen years of forest life and incognito residence, they asked for their share of the kingdom. To see whether war could be avoided, Dhritarashtra sent Sanjaya, his charioteer and minister, to the Pandavas as an envoy. Sanjaya was renowned for knowledge and integrity.

Sanjaya came to Yudhishthira's court and delivered Dhritarashtra's message. But the Pandavas sensed a hidden motive in it, as though under the name of peace there was an effort to keep them from their right. Though he was his king's envoy, Sanjaya conducted himself with respect toward the Pandavas.

What Sanjaya did after returning is proof of his truthfulness. In Dhritarashtra's assembly he did not hesitate to speak of the strength of the Pandavas and the greatness of Krishna. He told the truth instead of what the king wished to hear. He did not conceal the justice of the Pandavas' claim or the support they had from the people. Though it was unwelcome to Dhritarashtra, he did not fail to tell the truth.

This is what Valluvar calls purity, helpfulness and courage. Sanjaya did not alter truth for any gift from the king; he spoke as a true support to his state, and fearlessly gave news that was not pleasant. Tradition says that later he received divine vision to recount the scenes of the battlefield to Dhritarashtra. Knowledge and distinction seek out the person who stays on the path of truth.

To reflect on

When you speak on someone's behalf, do you have the courage to state a truth that he may not want to hear?
