Explanation

The last verse of the chapter names the peak quality of an envoy. 'Even if it brings death' means even if his life is to be lost. An envoy goes alone into an enemy land. If the message he states is unwelcome to the king there, he may be imprisoned, tortured or even killed. He sets out knowing this danger. Even so, the best envoy does not fall short at all in guarding his own king's good.

'Without lessening' means leaving nothing out and cutting nothing. Omitting part of the message from fear, or twisting the truth to soften its harshness, is the opposite of this verse. The envoy discharges his duty fully. Here 'steadfast good' means a good that lasts; sometimes to speak a bitter truth is what yields a king his long-term benefit.

We need not take the verse only as giving up one's life. Every occasion in our lives when we bear loss for the sake of duty is a form of it. One who speaks the truth, knowing that loss of position, enmity from others or social isolation may follow, is a living example of this verse. The affection with which the chapter began reaches, at its end, the state of sacrifice.

A story

Krishna's Embassy

From the Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata. After Sanjaya's mission had not succeeded, Krishna himself went to Hastinapura as the Pandavas' envoy as a last attempt to prevent war. The Pandavas were not asking for the whole kingdom; he went with a modest demand that only five villages be given. People along the way welcomed him.

Duryodhana wished to humiliate him. Krishna stayed in Vidura's house and came to the court the next day. Elders such as Bhishma, Drona and Dhritarashtra were present. Krishna calmly set forth the way of dharma. He said war would ruin both sides. He asked that the Pandavas' right be established and that five villages would suffice. His words were sweet and firm.

Duryodhana refused to give even as much land as a needle's point. Tradition says he even ordered Krishna to be seized. Krishna smiled without fear and revealed his cosmic form. Those in the court stood amazed, and some closed their eyes. Even when his life seemed in danger as an envoy, he did not turn from his duty in the least.

He returned and told the Pandavas what had happened, making clear the true state of the court and the enemy's resolve. Though the embassy seemed to fail, it showed the world that the Pandavas had made every effort by the path of dharma. It gave his side a lasting good. Even in peril of life he stood firm on the path of the envoy.
