Explanation

When an envoy speaks he carries the honour of his country on his tongue. A 'blemishing word' is a word that leaves a scar, one that brings disgrace to his country or king. Such words may come from anger, from fear, or from being provoked by the hostile talk of the court. When insulted in the enemy king's assembly, the envoy will feel the urge to answer back. But he must control his temper and speak only the dignified words fitting his king.

'The firm-hearted' means one with a steady heart. Here it does not mean harshness but unshaken resolve. He is strong enough to endure scorn and fulfil his duty. Yet he also stands firm where he must in order to protect the dignity of his state. To balance both is the difficult art.

The verse applies today to our speech on social media as well. A single word written in anger by someone speaking for an organisation can damage its name. A representative of a family can bring blame on it through temper. To pause before speaking and ask, 'Does this bring honour or shame to the one who sent me?' is the benefit of this verse. Everyone knows that a word once out cannot be recalled. But in the moment when anger flares in the midst of an assembly, it is hard to remember. That is why Valluvar names mental firmness as needed. A steady mind is not swept away by the waves of emotion.

A story

Hanuman in Ravana's Court

From the Sundara Kanda. After seeing Sita, Hanuman destroyed Ravana's garden and then allowed himself to be bound by Indrajit's Brahmastra. He was dragged to Ravana's court. Ravana sat on a high throne, and his rakshasa ministers and warriors mocked Hanuman.

Ravana angrily asked, 'Who are you? Why have you come? Why did you destroy our garden?' Some said he should be killed. Hanuman was unafraid. He declared himself the messenger of Rama. He did not return mockery for mockery; he spoke only words that protected the dignity of his king.

He spoke of Rama's strength and righteousness and advised Ravana that returning Sita was best for him. There was no fear in his voice, and no lowly word. He did not insult Ravana in anger. Since he had been given no seat, tradition says, he lengthened and coiled his tail into a tall seat and sat on it, so that he did not lower his standing.

By the law of that time an envoy should not be punished, and Vibhishana reminded Ravana of that dharma. Ravana did not kill Hanuman but ordered his tail set afire. Amid all this humiliation Hanuman lost neither his own honour nor his master's. By his words he brought no disgrace on his king. Firm of heart, he finished delivering his message.

Vibhishana's reminder of dharma raised Hanuman's standing still further. At that moment it was revealed that kings too have a duty to protect the honour due to an envoy. The institution of embassy endures only when the envoy and the king each keep their own dharma.

To reflect on

If someone insults you, can you still speak in a way that protects the name of those you represent?
