Explanation

Warming oneself before a fire in winter is an experience we all know. Sit too far away and the cold does not go; go too near and the body is scorched. The right distance changes with one's body and the size of the fire. Valluvar takes this simple experience as an image for the way to associate with a king. It is not merely an image; it is a rule of life for everyone who deals with power.

'Without going far' means not withdrawing altogether. If we stand too far from the king, we lose his trust and the benefit he could do us. 'Without drawing too near' means not coming too close. Too much closeness brings the risk of the king's anger, the jealousy of others, and the misery of being caught in palace politics. By the word for 'quick-tempered kings' Valluvar also reminds us that rulers are both fiery and powerful. Just as fire can do good or harm, so the king's wrath and favour can do either.

This yardstick is useful in life today. One who works with the head of an institution should keep the contact that is needed, but should not enter too far into the leader's private life. Even if friendly with a superior, one must not forget the boundary of the office. Closeness without distance and distance without closeness are both useless. The habit of keeping a calm gap is the life skill Valluvar teaches here.

A story

A Lesson Beside the Brazier

In the court of a king who ruled an old temple city in the Tamil land there served a physician named Venkatesan. This is an imagined tale. It was his duty to attend to the king whenever he fell ill. On a winter night, in the inner hall of the palace, a great brazier was burning. The king sat near it; the ministers and the physician sat in their own places.

Muthu, a young assistant physician newly in service, sought a place nearer to the king than anyone else. He longed for the king's first glance to fall on him. He sat very close to the brazier. Soon the heat began to scorch his face, and he squirmed and shifted. The king noticed and scolded, 'Who is that, and why is he fidgeting?'

The senior physician Venkatesan watched calmly. He himself sat a little away from the brazier, but within easy reach of the king's call. He felt neither cold nor heat, and he could step forward in a single stride if called. Softly he told the youth, 'My boy, sitting nearest the fire is not success. Wisdom is to sit where the fire does not burn you.'

Muthu moved back slowly. At first he was disappointed, but soon his body felt comfortable. That evening the king, with a calm mind, talked of his health to Venkatesan. Muthu watched from a distance and learned when to move near and when to stay quiet.

From that day Muthu stopped scrambling for a place near the king. When needed he stood with folded hands; when not needed he stepped aside. After some years he too became a trusted physician of the court. Valluvar's saying, 'like those who warm themselves at a fire', remained his guide for life.
