Explanation

This verse speaks of the danger of feeling 'I have been taken into trust' when near the king. It is a subtle fault. Having gained trust, many think, 'Now whatever I do, the king will tolerate.' That thought gradually makes them overstep. Then one day the king's patience ends and they fall. So the very thought 'we have been accepted' is the beginning of danger.

'Unshaken vision' means a steady, clear sight, a knowledge not confused by illusion. Such people are all the more careful because they are close to the king. They know that the higher the trust, the greater the pain of losing it. To regard the place given as a responsibility and not as a right is clear sight.

We see this today. If an employee well regarded by his manager begins to be careless, coming late and breaking rules, he may one day lose that regard. A favourite child in a family who uses the indulgence beyond limits harms the relationship. The way to protect the love and trust we get is not to use them as advantage. One who realises that trust is a gift seeks ways to guard it. One who regards it as a right seeks ways to use it. This difference decides the rise and fall of many people.

A story

The Minister's Humility

This is an imagined tale. In an old kingdom on the banks of the Kaveri, the minister Sivasankarar had won the king's trust and had been his support for many years. The king praised him: 'He is like my own eye.' In the court his word always came first.

One day his young assistant Sekar said softly to him, 'Sir, the king trusts you greatly. Surely now you may decide as you wish. Must you seek approval every time?' Sivasankarar smiled, shook his head and said, 'Sekar, it is just because I have been accepted by him that I ask for approval even more than before.'

He went on: 'Trust is like a pot full of water. The one who carries it must walk carefully. On an ordinary day a slight stumble is nothing. But with a full pot the same stumble spills the water. If the king praises me, I must walk with even more care than before.'

That year, when drought came, the king decided to hold a very expensive festival. The minister could have prevented it by his influence. But considering the king's mood and the time, he first listened fully to his wish. A week later, in private, he gently pointed to another way.

In the end the king changed his decision and used half the festival's cost to repair the water-tanks. Sivasankarar's standing rose, yet he did not become the least proud. He kept the king's affection to the end, which others lost. He was a man who walked with still greater care after he had gained trust.
