Explanation

What are the things that kings desire? The wealth of the palace, fine clothes and ornaments, beautiful places, those the king loves, the fame he longs for, and the power he holds. The king regards these as his own. If one who works near him begins to desire them too, the king takes him as a threat. Once that suspicion has risen, the man's position is perilous.

But the man who, free of such greed, does only his duty faithfully is trusted by the king. When the belief grows that 'this person has not tried to take anything from us', the king himself gives him what he needs from his own wish. This is what is meant by lasting prosperity. Wealth taken by stealth is lost one day; what is given in affection endures. The surprising lesson of the verse is that giving up desire is not a loss but the road to long-term gain.

We see this in today's workplace as well. The aide who does not try to seize the leader's post or fame, and who simply excels in his own task, gradually receives great trust and advancement. One who fights for his own glory instead of treating the institution's success as his own becomes an object of suspicion. Self-restraint therefore becomes the foundation of lasting growth.

A story

Bharata's Detached Rule

From the Ayodhya Kanda of the Ramayana. By the boons Kaikeyi obtained from Dasharatha, Rama had to go to the forest for fourteen years, and the kingdom was arranged to pass to Bharata. King Dasharatha died of grief at the separation from his son. When Bharata came from his uncle's house to Ayodhya and learned what had happened, he blazed with anger. He rebuked his mother's deed.

The court, the sage Vasishtha and the ministers all urged Bharata to ascend the throne. They argued that it was proper to accept a right that had come to him and that the country must not be without a king. But Bharata refused. 'The kingdom belongs to Rama alone. I do not desire it,' he said. He did not desire the throne, the very thing kings desire.

With a great army and the citizens he went to Chitrakuta to call Rama back. When Rama firmly refused, to keep his father's word, Bharata obtained Rama's sandals and brought them home. He placed them on the throne and ruled as Rama's representative. He himself lived an ascetic's life in a hut.

For all fourteen years he took none of the kingdom's wealth for himself. Though in the king's place, he lived as a servant and not as a king. When Rama returned, Bharata handed over the kingdom and wealth without any shortfall. The people of Ayodhya honoured his selfless service wholeheartedly, and Rama loved him as his own life.

This detachment gave Bharata undying fame. He lost nothing by renouncing the kingdom; even today he is honoured across India as the model of a brother. Bharata is the witness that one who does not desire what kings desire gains lasting greatness.
