Explanation

'Inam' means kin, relationship. 'Inam ponru inamallaar' are those who behave like kin but are not kin. The closeness they show us is a coating. In the second line there is the simile 'magalir manam pola verupadum'. The commentators explain it variously. Parimelazhagar and many others take 'magalir' here to refer to women who sell affection for gain. Others take it as a simile for the nature of any mind that changes according to benefit. In any case the idea is one: like a mind that changes with gain, their friendship is unstable.

The key word is 'verupadum', will change. True friendship is steady; false friendship changes its colour with circumstance. As long as there is benefit in us they pretend to be kinsfolk. When the benefit ends they suddenly turn to strangers. The sign is that their face appears one way one day and another the next.

In today's life we trust those we address as 'uncle', 'sister', 'brother' simply because of the kinship word. But a kinship word is not a real relationship. How they behave when we ask for help is the touchstone. Those who remain steady are kin; those who change are not.

The verse is not against warm manners. Calling a neighbour 'brother' is a lovely custom. It warns only against taking the title as proof. A title may be given by anyone in a moment; steadiness is earned only over seasons.

A story

The Neighbour Who Called Him Brother

In a street near Sivakasi, a man named Kumaresan ran a small printing press. In the house opposite, Selvaraj, who had newly moved in, from the very first day called Kumaresan 'brother' and showed great affection. He called Kumaresan's wife 'sister-in-law' and the children 'younger brother' and 'younger sister'. He brought sweets at Deepavali and gave sugarcane at Pongal.

Kumaresan treated him like his own sibling. He shared with him the jobs of his press, his customers and his debts. Selvaraj sometimes came to the press and gave small help. Kumaresan was happy.

A few years passed. An order came to Kumaresan's press to print the invitations for a big temple festival. If he completed it, he would have good income. At the same time Selvaraj had started a press of his own. He approached Kumaresan's customers, offering to do the work cheaper. He also took the temple order for himself.

When Kumaresan went and asked him, Selvaraj did not call him 'brother' as before. "This is business; there is no kinship in it," he said. Kumaresan's wife wept: "Is this how he behaves, he who called me sister?"

Kumaresan quietly took a decision. "I shall not trust anyone on the strength of a kinship word again. I shall trust by deeds." In later years, some who helped him were ordinary people who used no kinship word. By their deeds they became kin.
