Explanation

This verse gives a clear sign for recognising deceivers. 'Mugaththin iniya nagaa' means smiling sweetly with the face; 'agaththinna' means bitter in the heart; 'vanjarai' means deceivers. Such persons are 'anjappadum', to be feared. Valluvar says such deceivers are more to be feared than an enemy who attacks openly.

Why? We expect the enemy and prepare to guard against him. The deceiver changes our expectation. He makes us lower our own net of safety. His smile is an invitation to take off our armour. His sweet words are a key to make us tell our secrets. So the harm he does is great.

In modern life a pleasant face is regarded as social courtesy. Everyone smiles. We cannot tell from the smile who is genuine and who is acting. So we must examine their actions, the way they speak of us in our absence, and the face they show in our distress. This is not distrust but discernment.

One practical way to apply it is to notice what a smile costs. A sincere smile continues when it is inconvenient; it stays when the occasion demands a hard word, a shared burden, a deferred reward. A smile that appears only when we are useful is the deceiver's smile.

A story

Putana's Sweet Smile

In the Bhagavata Purana an incident from Krishna's infancy is a prime example of deadly deceit. Kamsa, the cruel king of Mathura, learnt that his nephew Krishna would kill him. To destroy the child growing in the cowherd village, he sent many demons. The first of them was Putana.

Putana was a demoness. She took the form of a very beautiful young woman. Anointed with perfume, wearing flowers, with a gentle smile, she came to the village of the cowherds. The cowherd women were amazed. "She must be a goddess's daughter," they thought. She said to Yashoda in a sweet voice, "May I fondle your child? I love children dearly."

The affection on her face melted Yashoda's doubt. She gave the baby Krishna to her. Putana placed the child on her lap and rocked him tenderly. But her breast had been smeared with deadly poison. She planned to kill the child while pretending to nurse him.

Though a baby, Krishna knew her intent. As she fed him, the Purana says, he drew her life out along with the milk. Unable to bear the pain, Putana fell in her huge demon form and died. The cowherds ran up, frightened. Only then did they learn that a sweet face and a show of tenderness had hidden a deadly poison within.

This is the supreme example of 'mugaththin iniya nagaa agaththinnaa vanjar'. Her smile, perfume and tenderness were all instruments of deceit. By divine grace the child was saved. But ordinary people have no such protection, and so Valluvar bids us fear such persons.
