Explanation

The closing verse of the chapter gives a practical conclusion. What should one do when the time comes that an enemy approaches us in friendship? Valluvar says: show friendship in the face and let go of friendship in the heart. 'Muka nattu' means to befriend only with the face. 'Aga natpu oreei vidal' means to set aside the friendship and trust that arise from the heart. In this way the enmity does not burst out openly, and at the same time we are not deceived within.

Commentators differ on 'pakai natpaam kaalam'. Parimelazhagar takes it as the time when one cannot overcome the enemy by hostility and he comes forward to befriend. That is, when our strength is low, we should not oppose the enemy directly but keep company agreeably. Others take it as the time when enemies themselves come to friendship, and even then one must not place inner trust.

We should note that Valluvar is not teaching treachery here. Behaving courteously in appearance is a virtue due to everyone. Not provoking hostility and not giving room for harm is self-protection. It is not a deception to push an enemy toward harm; it is the prudence of guarding oneself.

In today's life we may have to work with a former rival in an unwelcome setting, or live in the same house as a relative with whom we are at odds. Then we may show respect and cooperation, but we must not drop caution and boundaries in the important matters.

The verse concludes the chapter with composure: courtesy outside, discernment inside.

A story

The Two Merchants

In a great temple town, a small trader named Muthuvelan lived by selling puja materials. On the same street was a bigger merchant, Somasundaram, who for many days had tried to lure Muthuvelan's customers away and close his shop. Because of this, enmity grew between them.

When the temple chariot festival came, the elders of the town called all the merchants together and ordered them to sell puja goods under one common pandal. Suddenly Somasundaram came to Muthuvelan and said, 'It was wrong of us to compete for so long; let us now be friends.' Muthuvelan remembered a verse his mother had told him: 'Pakai natpaam kaalam varungaal muka nattu aga natpu oreei vidal.'

Muthuvelan welcomed him with a smile. 'Very good, sir, let us share the space in the pandal.' But he did not show him his account books, his special prices or his list of customers. When Somasundaram suggested several times that they keep joint accounts, he declined politely: 'I am used to my old way, sir.'

When the festival ended, Somasundaram had not been able to take away Muthuvelan's customers. He had behaved courteously outside and guarded only his own business within. They parted with a good name on both sides. Friendship in the face and caution in the heart is the essence of the story. The tale also reminds us that courtesy outside is a duty and caution within is a right.
