Explanation

Valluvar here personifies modesty as a good woman. 'Naan' is the quality of being ashamed to do wrong. Like a good lady it is gentle and dignified and stays only where there is propriety around it. When the fault called liquor comes in, that good lady cannot stay and turns her back. 'Purangodutthal' also means turning the back in defeat and running from battle. So modesty runs from him as if it had been defeated in a battlefield.

The phrase 'penaap perunkutram' is deep. 'Penuthal' is to cherish and to guard; 'penaa' means not to be cherished or fostered. Some faults are small and can be mended. Drinking becomes a great fault because it is the doorway to all other faults. Once modesty goes, falsehood, anger, theft and foul speech all settle easily.

Modesty is the inner guard of a person. One who has lost it cannot be good by outer guards alone. The feeling that even if the world does not see, our conscience sees, is modesty. Intoxication destroys that very feeling.

Even now we see people who forget themselves in public places. Someone who is quiet in ordinary times becomes a completely different person in drink. That is the state in which modesty has departed.

So those who wish to grow good qualities should cherish and foster modesty as the first fence guarding them. The simple way to protect it is not to touch intoxication.

A story

The Story of Ajamila

This story is told in the sixth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana.

In the city of Kanyakubja lived a brahmin named Ajamila. In youth he had studied the Veda, was disciplined, respected his parents and teacher and never failed in his daily duties. One day, when he went to the forest at his father's bidding to fetch flowers and sacrificial twigs, a scene he saw on the way unsettled his mind. That one moment changed the course of his life.

He forgot his learning and his conduct. He left his wife, home and parents and lived with another woman. To please her he became a slave to liquor too. He gambled for money, committed highway robbery and lied. One who had once been a man of right conduct lost modesty completely and became a man whom the town feared.

Many children were born to him. He named the youngest 'Narayana' and loved the child dearly. When eating and playing he called, "Narayana, come here." That name alone was the one good seed left in his life.

His last day came. The messengers of Yama arrived to take his life. Terrified, Ajamila cried out to his beloved son, "Narayana!" At that moment the messengers of Vishnu appeared and stopped Yama's men, saying he should not be punished because he had uttered the Lord's name.

Waking to life, Ajamila shuddered at his past. "What great sins I have done!" he trembled, and giving up everything he did penance on the bank of the Ganga. In the end he attained a good state.

The tale shows that liquor and bad habits destroy modesty, but that the grace of the Lord opens a way for those who realise their fault and wish to mend.
