Explanation

Some drinkers think they do it in secret. They suppose that no one at home or in the village knows of their habit. Valluvar makes that belief false. 'Ullotri' is to engage in something within, in hiding. 'Ulloor nagappaduvar' means the people of the town will laugh at him. The warning is that even if done in secret, the marks of it come out.

'Kansaaibavar' refers to the drooping eyes of the drunkard. The intoxication shows in the eyes, in the walk and in the speech. However much he hides, the smell, the gait, the behaviour and the manner of spending money give him away. The locals have known a man for a long time, and nothing can easily be hidden from them.

Secrecy itself is a mark of injury. Whatever we wish to hide while doing it is proof that our own conscience knows it as wrong. Continuing though knowing it to be wrong destroys our modesty further. The man who hides must tell lies every day, and those lies open the way to more lies.

Even in today's technological world, secrets are not kept. In family, among friends and in the office the truth comes out easily. Better to spend that energy on stopping it.

So secrecy is no protection; it is the beginning of more trouble. Frankly accepting the truth and mending oneself gives a person dignity.

A story

The Margazhi Morning Bhajan

This is an imagined tale set in a Tamil village in the month of Margazhi.

In a small town near Tiruchirappalli, every day of the month of Margazhi at dawn a bhajan takes place at the Perumal temple. All the villagers walk in procession through the streets singing the Tiruppavai and Tiruvempavai. A leading member of the group was Sundaram, a man with a sweet voice and a good name, who spoke respectfully to everyone in the village.

But for some months Sundaram had been secretly cultivating a habit. In a grove outside the village he had begun to drink toddy with a friend. He thought no one knew. But for some days his voice had faltered a little, and his eyes were red.

One cold Margazhi dawn, as the bhajan group walked through the street, Sundaram missed a line of the song. His feet stumbled for a moment. A child nearby said plainly, "Grandfather, there is a different smell in your breath." All heard.

For a moment there was silence. Then some chuckled softly. Some turned their faces aside. The elders looked at him kindly. He understood that what he had hidden was known to the village. He reddened.

That evening the elder of the temple spoke to him alone. "Sundaram, this is no new news to the village. People kept silent hoping you would realise and mend. There is a sweetness in your voice that God has given. Do not lose it this way," he said. Sundaram wept. The villagers did not mock him afterwards; they were glad to hear him sing again.

He gave up the hiding that very day. He told the elder frankly and asked for help. Little by little he gave up the habit and began again to sing in a clear voice on the Margazhi mornings. His concealment had given him no peace; an open heart gave him freedom.

What are you hiding that would feel lighter if it were simply said aloud to someone you trust?
