Explanation

It is natural for a gambler to win a few rounds at the beginning, and those very wins are the enchantment that urges him to play on. Valluvar takes the bait on the angler's hook as his image. The fish sees the bait and swallows it gladly, thinking it has found food, never knowing that a barb lies hidden inside. In the same way a small win at gambling stirs a man's greed and then turns into the hook that drags him entirely in.

So the couplet says: even if you win at the start, do not desire that game. To recognise that the winning itself is the first sign of danger is a high wisdom. In the Hindu householder's dharma, which asks him to protect righteousness and wealth, easy gain is not to be trusted, and wealth earned by honest labour is held to be the lasting kind. Some commentators read the couplet as condemning the early win itself as the evil. Others read it as pointing to the mind that does not stop when satisfied. Both readings stress the wisdom of withdrawing at the very beginning.

In any field of life we may therefore ask whether an easy and swift profit is drawing us into a snare. A small success may be the prelude to a great loss. Only a clear mind stays cautious even in the middle of victory.

A story

The Hook and the Festival

This is an imagined tale; its setting is the Panguni Uttiram festival in a seaside village.

In a fishing village near Nagapattinam lived an old fisherman named Sellaiah. His grandson Kannan was a young man of twenty. At the Panguni Uttiram festival there was a small gambling tent outside the temple. Kannan went there with his friends and, merely for fun, staked two rupees. He won the first round and the second. By evening he had three hundred rupees in his pocket, and he went home happy.

"Grandfather, today I earned three hundred without any work!" he said proudly. The old man smiled quietly. "Come with me to the boat tomorrow morning," he said. At dawn the two went out to sea. Sellaiah fixed a small piece of prawn to a hook and cast it into the water. In a few minutes a fish swallowed the bait. When he drew in the line, it was thrashing.

"Was this fish happy just now?" he asked. Kannan thought. "Yes, grandfather. It must have been happy when it ate the bait." The grandfather said, "The hook was inside that very happiness. The three hundred you won yesterday was the bait on your hook. The tent-keeper gave it to you knowingly."

Kannan fell silent for a moment. The sweetness of yesterday's win faded in his heart. He remembered one of his friends who, within a month at the same tent, had sold his father's boat net and lost it all. That friend too had won at first.

Kannan put the three hundred rupees into the temple hundi. From that day he never looked at the tent again. Out at sea he had learnt that only wealth earned by labour endures.
