Explanation

Here Valluvar uses an image from Tamil tradition. Mukati, or Mudevi, is the goddess of poverty, laziness and misfortune, regarded as the opposite of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. Valluvar says that gambling is a form of that goddess. Those she covers cannot fill their bellies and wander in distress. "Akadu aaraar" means those whose stomachs are not full.

The gambler loses to the dice the fruit of his labour and the food stored at home. Not only he but his family is left without food. This is the cruellest consequence of gambling. In the Mahabharata, when the Pandavas lost the kingdom at dice and went to the forest, finding food was their first difficulty. Yudhishthira worshipped Surya, the Sun, and received the Akshaya Patra. Without that grace his brothers and his wife would have suffered hunger.

The word "moodappattaar", covered, suggests being wrapped in darkness. Gambling covers a man so completely that he can no longer think of himself or his family. That poverty and laziness are pictured as a goddess shows the depth of our tradition. The only escape is labour and the earning of wealth by righteous means.

In Tamil homes the custom of welcoming Lakshmi and sending out Mudevi still lives. Its inner sense is to keep the house clean, light the lamp, and honour labour and discipline. The gambler walks in the opposite direction. The day the hearth in his house does not burn shows him the true price of gambling, and that day's hunger troubles not only him but his children. By the time he realises it, it is often too late.

A story

The Akshaya Patra

In the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata, the Pandavas, having lost everything at dice, began their twelve years of exile. Draupadi, many brahmins and sages followed them into the forest. It was Yudhishthira's duty to feed them. The fruit and roots of the forest did not suffice for all. The state of not having a full belly began on the very first day.

Yudhishthira approached his teacher, the sage Dhaumya. "How shall I feed those who have followed me?" he asked. Dhaumya advised him to worship Surya, the Sun, by reciting his hundred and eight names. Yudhishthira stood in the Ganga water and praised the Sun with penance. Surya appeared in person and gave him a copper vessel. "Every day this vessel will yield four kinds of food. It will suffice for any number until Draupadi has eaten. After she eats it becomes empty," he said.

That vessel satisfied everyone's hunger throughout the exile. Yet even after he received it, Yudhishthira's heart ached. He knew that had he not lost at dice, his brothers and wife would not have had to long for food in the forest. One day, when the sage Durvasa arrived unexpectedly with his disciples, the vessel was empty. Krishna came, ate a single grain stuck to the vessel, and satisfied the hunger of all.

These events recall Valluvar's words. For those covered by the evil of gambling, even a full meal becomes rare. The Pandavas were saved by grace, but an ordinary man has no such assurance. So the protection is to avoid gambling at the very beginning. Yudhishthira felt, every moment of those days, that the honour of a family weighs more than the hunger of a belly. Feeding the hungry is the foremost dharma of a householder, and it was exactly the power to fulfil that dharma which gambling took away. Only grace could set the loss right.
