Explanation

This couplet gives one of the most celebrated ideas of equality in Tamil literature. "Pirappu okkum ellaa uyirkkum" means birth is of the same nature for all beings. All of us are born of a mother's womb; all grow in the same way. So by birth one cannot say one is higher and another lower. But "sirappu ovvaa", their distinction is not alike, and that difference comes "seythozhil vetrumaiyaan", from the difference in the work they do.

The deeper meaning is that eminence is something we make, not something given to us by birth. A person who does good acts rises; one who does evil falls. This gives everyone both opportunity and responsibility. One born in a low family may rise by good acts; one born in a high family may fall by bad ones.

In Hindu tradition the best example is the story of Satyakama Jabala. The Bhagavad Gita too says "guna-karma-vibhagashah", that quality and action are the basis of division. Some commentators take "thozhil" as occupation, others as action and conduct. In both, the loftiness of deeds is greatness. Birth is not in our hands, but action is; so anyone may begin the journey to greatness at any moment.

A story

Satyakama Jabala

In the fourth chapter of the Chandogya Upanishad comes the story of Satyakama Jabala. A woman named Jabala had a boy, Satyakama. He wished to gain Vedic knowledge. One day he came to his mother and asked, "Mother, I wish to go to a gurukula and learn the Veda. What is my father's name? What is my lineage? If the teacher asks, what shall I say?"

Jabala told the truth: "Son, in my youth I was serving in many households. In that time you were born. I do not know who your father is. My name is Jabala; your name is Satyakama. Tell the teacher this; call yourself Satyakama Jabala." The mother did not hide it, nor tell a lie. The boy accepted it without shame.

Satyakama went to the sage Gautama. "Sir, I have come to you to learn brahmacharya; will you accept me?" The sage asked, "What is your lineage? Who is your father?" The boy told exactly what his mother said: "I do not know. When I asked my mother, she said that I was born while she served many in her youth and that she did not know who my father was. My name is only Satyakama Jabala."

The sage said with a smile, "The courage to speak truth belongs only to a brahmin. You are a brahmin. Bring firewood; I will initiate you." He sent him to tend the cattle. Satyakama made four hundred lean cows a thousand, and lived in the forest for years in truth. The bull, the fire, the swan and the water-bird came and taught him the knowledge of Brahman. More than birth, truth and conduct gave him eminence.
