Explanation

In the previous couplet Valluvar said all are equal by birth. In this couplet he says the same regarding station. Even if a person is in a high position, wealth or lineage, if he lacks high character he is not truly high. Likewise, even if he is in a low state, in poverty, or in a place society reckons low, if there is no lowness in his character he is not low. The words "mel" and "keezh" distinguish outward station from inward worth.

This distinction is Valluvar's voice against social injustice. The station society sees is often a false yardstick. The true yardstick is character, conduct and action. If one in high office is proud and does base deeds, the world will not honour him. If one in a humble station has humility and honesty, the world will praise him. This is the truth that has held across ages.

In Hindu tradition Shabari is a fine example. Some commentators take the two halves of this couplet as separate counsels, others as two sides of one idea. In both, the message is that character is eminence. Those who speak kindly to the household helper are truly high; those who forget old friends once office comes are low though seated high.

A story

Shabari's Love

The story of Shabari comes in the Aranya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. Shabari was an elderly woman of a forest-dwelling tribe. She lived serving in the ashram of the sage Matanga. Society may have reckoned her humble and low in station, but her heart was filled with love of the Lord. At the end of his life, Sage Matanga told her, "Stay right here. One day Rama will come here. After seeing him you will attain liberation."

From that day Shabari waited many years for Rama's coming. Every day she cleaned the ashram. She picked flowers and kept them. She gathered fruit from the forest. So that the fruit she gave Rama might be sweet, she tasted each one herself, and kept only the sweet ones. Time passed. Her hair turned grey; her back bent.

One day Rama and Lakshmana, searching for Sita, came to the bank of the Pampa river where she lived. Shabari ran and fell at their feet. In tears she said, "Rama, my guru said you would come. Here are my fruits," and set before him the fruits she had tasted. Lakshmana hesitated. But Rama, seeing her love, was glad and ate each fruit with relish.

Rama said to Shabari, "The love you showed me is great to me. Devotion is higher to me than caste, lineage and wealth." With Rama's blessing she laid down her body and reached the higher world. One who seemed low in society's eyes gained a very high place in Rama's heart through devotion. Thus the couplet "keezhirundum keezhallaar keezhallavar" became true in her life.
