Explanation

Valluvar says the mark of the great shows in the rarity of the deeds they do. "Aatruvaar" means those with the strength to carry a thing through. "Aatrin" is also read as "by proper means". When great people undertake a rare deed they do not choose shortcuts; they finish it by the right path, with patience and continued effort. Where others give up saying "this cannot be done", they begin.

The couplet stresses both skill and character. A rare deed is not only hard; it also benefits many. A hard deed done for selfish gain brings less greatness than a hard deed done for the welfare of the world. They are great because they bring the patience and sacrifice such a deed demands.

Bhagiratha of the Bala Kanda of the Ramayana is a fine example. His effort to bring the Ganga down to earth to liberate his ancestors is still called a "Bhagiratha effort". Some commentators read "aatrin" as "by fitting means", others as "by effort".

In our own lives, digging a well for a village, starting and running a school, or regrowing a forest are rare deeds. The one who begins may be single, but in the end many benefit.

A story

Bhagiratha's Penance for the Ganga

In the Bala Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana, sage Vishvamitra tells Rama and Lakshmana the story of Bhagiratha. King Sagara of Ayodhya let loose a horse for the Ashvamedha sacrifice. Indra stole it and tied it near the ashram of sage Kapila. Sagara's sixty thousand sons dug up the earth searching for the horse. Seeing Kapila, they wrongly took him for the thief and spoke insultingly. By the sage's wrathful glance they were all reduced to ashes. For their souls to reach a good end, the waters of the Ganga had to flow over the ashes.

Sagara's grandson Amshuman and his son Dilipa tried to bring the Ganga down and failed. Dilipa's son Bhagiratha handed the kingdom to his ministers and did severe penance for a thousand years at Gokarna. Brahma was pleased and agreed that the Ganga should descend. But the earth had no strength to bear her force as she fell from the sky. So Bhagiratha prayed to Lord Shiva with further penance. Shiva took pity and received the Ganga in his matted locks. Her pride subsided, and he released her to the earth in a small stream.

Bhagiratha went ahead in his chariot, and the Ganga followed. On the way her flood drowned the sacrificial ground of sage Jahnu. The sage drank her up; at Bhagiratha's plea he released her through his ear, so she is called Jahnavi. At last the Ganga touched the ashes of Sagara's sons and they ascended to heaven. Bhagiratha's greatness was in persisting not for himself but for his ancestors and the world, even after generations of failure.
