Meaning

Would anyone make a fine veena and then fling it into the dust to be ruined? Tell me, Shiva-Shakti! You have made me with a mind blazing with understanding. Will you not give me the strength to live so that this great earth may benefit? Tell me, Shiva-Shakti! Will you make me live as a mere burden on the land?

I asked for a body that goes wherever the heart wills, like a ball struck with force. I asked for a mind free of craving. I asked for a life that shines anew each day. I asked for a good heart that sings of Shiva-Shakti even if fire burns my flesh. I asked for an unwavering mind. Is there anything that stops you from granting these?

Explanation

This is Bharathiyar's most famous prayer. He sees himself as a veena, a fine instrument made by the Mother herself. To fling it into the dust would shame its maker. So this is not timid begging; it is a question asked with a child's right: 'Tell me!'

The boons in the second part map a whole yogic life. The body must obey the heart; the mind must be free of craving; life must be renewed daily; the heart must sing even in pain; the intellect must be unshaken. Body, mind, life, heart and understanding are all to serve Shakti together.

The fear of living 'as a burden on the land' was Bharathiyar's lifelong fear. He believed that one who has been given a gift and does not use it wastes what God has given.

To reflect on

What kind of veena are you? Is it lying in the dust, or is it being played?
