Meaning

All the birds that fly in the sky are I; all the beasts that roam the earth are I; all the trees that grow in the forest's shade are I; the wind, the water and the sea are I. All the stars that shine in the heavens are I; all the vastness of open space is I; all the worms that lie in the soil are I; all the creatures in the ocean are I.

All the poems Kamban sang are I; all the forms the painters draw are I; the mansions and halls, the beautiful cities and temple towers that this world marvels at, all of them are I. I am within the music of women singing sweet songs; all gatherings of joy are I; all the lies of base people are I; every unbearable meeting of sorrows is I.

I am the one who moves a million mantras; the nature of every moving thing is I; I am the one who fashioned a million tantras; I am the one who spoke the shastras and the Vedas. I am the one who made all the worlds; I am the one who turns them without fault; all the hosts of good powers we see are I; I am the one who shines as the cause of all.

I am the one who runs the lie called 'I'; I am the one who moves in the sky of the flame of wisdom; I am the first Light, shining as knowledge, one in all things that exist!

Explanation

This song is composed in the metre called irattai kural ven senthurai. It is a song of 'soham', I am That.

In the tenth chapter of the Gita, the Vibhuti Yoga, Krishna lists his glories: 'among the stars I am the moon, among trees the ashvattha, among waters the ocean.' Bharathiyar speaks in the same way, but he does not stop with the best of things. The worm, the lie and sorrow are 'I' too. The Isha Upanishad says that all that moves in this world is clothed by the Lord; nothing is left out.

The last lines are very subtle: 'I am the one who runs the lie called I.' The small 'I' of ego is false; the great 'I' that runs it is the Self. Ramana Maharshi pointed to this difference with the question 'Who am I?'. Bharathiyar's answer: the first Light, shining as knowledge, one in all things.

To reflect on

Could you stand before something you dislike and say 'this too is I'? How does that feel?
