Explanation

The first couplet of this chapter names two natural traits of good birth: "seppam", rectitude, and "naan", the sense of shame at wrongdoing. Seppam is straight conduct, a heart without falsehood and deceit. Naan is recoiling from a fault, a mind that does not give room to what others would blame. It is rare to find both together. Many have honesty but no modesty; some have modesty but their honesty does not hold. Valluvar says it is those born in a good house in whom both come naturally.

There is depth in the word "iyalbaaga", naturally. This is not a discipline only to be learned; it is a quality that blends with the mind when a child grows seeing, hearing and feeling it in the home from early years. In a good family parents do not lie, do not covet others' goods, and feel shame at wrongdoing. The child who grows watching such scenes receives it naturally. The conduct of parents is therefore the first school of kudimai.

In Hindu tradition Sita is the emblem of such family virtue. Raised as the daughter of King Janaka of Mithila, she stood unshaken in the Ashoka grove against Ravana's threats and honeyed words. Some commentators take this as superiority of birth, others as a quality from good habit. Either way, the best family is where rectitude and modesty meet.

A story

Sita in the Ashoka Grove

In the Sundara Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana comes the episode of Sita imprisoned in the Ashoka grove. She was the child King Janaka of Mithila found when he ploughed the ground for a sacrifice, and so she is called Janaki and Vaidehi. From childhood she grew up seeing dharma and good conduct in her father's palace. Ravana abducted her, took her to Lanka, and kept her in the Ashoka grove guarded by rakshasis.

One day Ravana came to Sita in his royal robes, with great wealth. "If you become my wife you will be queen of all Lanka. Your husband is a forest-dweller; what can he give you?" he tempted. Sita did not even wish to look at him. She picked up a blade of grass with her hand and placed it between herself and Ravana. As though that blade were her boundary, she answered him without looking beyond it.

"Ravana, you know no dharma. I am Janaka's daughter, Dasharatha's daughter-in-law, Rama's wife. Our family does not fail in word or deed. However much wealth you give me, I will not go anywhere away from my husband," she said. Her voice had no fear; it had composure and firmness. Ravana grew angry and threatened, "Agree within a month, or I will make you my meal."

Sita did not tremble. She refused food. When Hanuman came and gave the ring, she still refused to go with him out of modesty, saying, "My husband must come and rescue me; that is the family dharma." In solitude, hunger and threat, her rectitude and modesty never left her. They were natural to her. She stood as the living form of what Valluvar said, "naturally, rectitude and modesty."
