Explanation

A plant sprouting in a field shows whether the soil is fertile or barren. In the same way, the word that comes from a person's mouth reveals the family environment in which he grew up. "Kaal" means the sprout or root, which shows outwardly the richness within the soil. A person's word likewise shows the richness of his heart and the culture of his family. Speech is an outward appearance, and under it lies an entire upbringing.

There is a deep lesson in this simile. More than the lessons we teach our children, it is the words they hear at home that shape their speech. If parents speak sweetly the child speaks sweetly; if harshly the child does likewise. So the linguistic culture of a family is the mirror of its kudimai. Choosing words carefully is not only an individual's duty but a family's honour.

In the Mahabharata, Yudhishthira's answers to the Yaksha showed the high culture of his family. Some commentators take "kaal" as the sprout, others as air or sign. The sprout meaning is apt, since the crop shows the nature of the soil.

There is a further practical lesson. The words we speak in anger or weariness show not only ourselves but those who raised us. A good habit is therefore to pause a moment before speaking. One who speaks after thinking adds honour to the family by his words. A sweet word is a gift a family gives the world.

A story

The Yaksha's Questions

In the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata comes the section called Yaksha Prashna. On a day in the last years of the exile, a deer carried off a brahmin's fire-sticks and churning rod. The Pandavas chased it. The deer vanished. Tired, they sat beneath a tree. Yudhishthira sent his brother Nakula to fetch water.

Nakula reached a nearby pond. As he went to take water a voice from the sky said, "Do not take water without answering my questions." Unable to bear his thirst, Nakula drank. At once he fell unconscious. Then Sahadeva, Arjuna and Bhima fell likewise.

Last of all Yudhishthira reached the pond. He saw his brothers lying fallen. He heard the voice, and calmly prepared for the questions. A Yaksha appeared on the bank and asked many deep questions: "What is greater than the earth? What is higher than the sky? What is swifter than the wind? What is more numerous than grass?" Yudhishthira answered calmly, "The mother is greater than the earth; the father is higher than the sky; the mind is swifter than the wind; worries are more numerous than grass."

The Yaksha asked further: "Who is happy? What is the world's wonder?" Yudhishthira said, "He who has no debt and eats simple gruel at home is happy. That people see others die every day and yet think they will live forever is the world's wonder." All his answers were full of calm and wisdom. The Yaksha revealed himself as Dharma and was pleased.

The Yaksha said he would revive only one brother. Yudhishthira chose Nakula. "I, Kunti's son, am here; one son of Madri too should live," he said. Seeing the generosity of that word, the Yaksha revived all four. Yudhishthira's words showed the high upbringing of his family.
