Explanation

In the last couplet of the chapter Valluvar sets the worth of the sanror on the scale of the world. The world stands because sanrors exist. If they fall short of their worth, that is, lack in their good qualities, this vast earth will bear a burden it cannot carry. "Mannoo" is a particle mingling grief and wonder, meaning "alas, it cannot bear."

Here "porai" is the load to be borne. The earth carries every person. When good people are present the load grows light; when good people lessen, the same load becomes unbearable. The reason is that those who do evil are a burden to the world, while those who do good are its support. Since sanrors are the supporting pillars, when they fail everything gives way.

In the tenth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana there is the story of Bhumi Devi complaining to Brahma that she could not bear the load. When proud kings and their armies multiplied, the earth in the form of a cow went weeping to plead. As a result, the Purana says, the Lord appeared as Krishna to establish dharma.

Some commentators take "kundrin" as diminishing in number, others as diminishing in quality. In both, the end is that the earth cannot bear it. So the couplet puts on each of us the responsibility to try to be a sanror.

Honouring the good people around us, and trying at least to be one sanror ourselves, is a small contribution to keeping this world standing. One person's being good is a supporting pillar not only for himself but for his whole village. That is the final lesson of the chapter on worth.

A story

The Plea of Bhumi Devi

At the beginning of the tenth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana the plea of Bhumi Devi is told. At the end of the Dvapara age many wicked asuras were born as kings. With arrogance they gathered great armies, oppressed the people, tormented sages and destroyed dharma. The burden of this injustice became unbearable to the Earth Goddess.

Bhumi Devi took the form of a cow and went weeping to Lord Brahma. "Father, I cannot bear the burden of the wicked. The good suffer. Dharma wanes. Show me a way," she pleaded. Brahma took her with Lord Shiva and the other gods to the shore of the ocean of milk. There they praised Lord Vishnu with the Purusha Sukta.

In meditation Brahma heard the voice of the Lord: "I know the sorrow that has come to the earth. I shall appear in the Yadu line as the son of Vasudeva and Devaki and establish dharma. Let the gods too be born as Yadavas and help me." Brahma comforted the gods and Bhumi Devi. Before long Krishna was born at Mathura.

The message of this tale matches Valluvar's thought: when the wicked multiply the land groans, unable to bear them; when the good lessen, the world falters. When sanrors keep their good qualities the earth stands lightly. If they multiplied, the Lord would not need to appear to re-establish dharma. For each of us to hold our own worth is the simple way to lighten the earth's burden.
