Explanation

This verse states the unity of love through a simple question: whatever the bond is between body and soul, such is the bond between her and me. No one can say when body and soul were joined or how they could be parted. A body without life is a corpse, and a soul without a body cannot act in this world. Each depends on the other. The lover says that the tie between them is just as inseparable. The words enna and anna hang between a question and an answer: if you ask what the relation of body and soul is, the answer is that it is a closeness that cannot be explained.

Valluvar uses the word natpu, friendship, for love. Love is not mere attraction; it contains the depth and the right of friendship. A good friend becomes to us like life itself. The Tamil idiom uyirth thozhan, "friend as dear as life," carries the same idea. Valluvar gives love that same depth.

In modern life domestic bonds are often filled with duties and responsibilities, and in their midst the thread of friendship slips away. This verse reminds husband and wife that they must also be friends. Where each regards the other as body and life, small quarrels do not become large splits. Such friendship is the basis of enduring love.

A story

Savitri Who Followed Death

This is the story of Savitri and Satyavan from the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. Savitri, daughter of King Ashvapati of Madra, went out to seek her own husband and chose Satyavan, son of the blind king Dyumatsena who lived in the forest. When the sage Narada said, "Satyavan is good, but his life will end within a year," Savitri did not change her mind. "Once I have chosen in my heart, I will not change," she said.

After marriage she accepted a simple life in the forest and cared for her parents-in-law. As the day of Satyavan's death approached, she fasted for three days. On the appointed day she went with him to the forest to cut wood. There Satyavan felt a pain in his head and lay down in her lap. His life departed. Yama, lord of dharma and death, came and took his soul.

Savitri followed Yama without stopping. "Stop. Go back," said Yama, but she continued. Seeing her devotion, her firmness and her wisdom, Yama was moved. He told her he would grant any boon except Satyavan's life. Savitri asked for her father-in-law's eyesight and his lost kingdom. Then she asked for a hundred sons for her father. For the third boon she asked for a hundred sons for herself. Yama said, "So be it."

Then Savitri asked, using her intelligence, "Without my husband, how can a hundred sons be born?" Yama smiled, praised her wisdom and love, and returned Satyavan's life. The Mahabharata says the two lived happily.

The story recalls what the verse says: when a bond is like that of body and soul, love has the power even to win back a life. Savitri followed Yama not to conquer death but to recover half of her own life. That is the friendship between body and soul.
