Explanation

Here the heroine's worry goes a step further. Because her beloved lives in her eyes and heart, she is afraid even to blink. She knows that if she blinks, he will vanish for a moment. But the villagers talk differently: in that instant of her blink, they make up a tale that he has left her. The word edhilar means a stranger, one without relationship. In truth he is within her heart, but the village denounces him as a stranger.

There is a paradox. The separation of a closed eyelid lasts a moment, and yet the village blames him for even that. Valluvar shows how exaggerated village talk is. The outside world cannot know how close lovers are within. They may appear far apart outwardly while united inwardly. Love cannot be measured by outward appearance, and that is the lesson.

Social media today commits the same mistake easily. A habit of passing judgment on a relationship from one photo, one word or one moment is growing. How much do we know of the depth of another's relationship? Rather than decide the whole picture from the small visible part, it is civilised to be gentle and respectful. A kind society refrains from opinions about what it does not know, and speaks gently even after knowing; the verse reminds us of this as well.

A story

Shabari's Waiting

In the Aranya Kanda of the Ramayana comes the story of Shabari, an aged woman of austerity. She lived serving in the hermitage of the sage Matanga. Near the end of his life Matanga told her, "One day Rama will come to this hermitage; welcome him and honour him." Trusting that word, Shabari waited for Rama's arrival for years.

Every morning she rose and swept the path of the hermitage and gathered forest fruits. The tales say that, intending to give Rama only sweet fruit, she tasted each one and kept only the sweet. Others in the hermitage may have wondered how a prince would ever come to a forest ashram. But Shabari did not lose faith even for the time of a blink.

Each day of waiting was an expectation that Rama might arrive at the door. She did not want to take her eyes off the path. She was possessed by the fear that in a blink of an eye he might come and go.

At last Rama and Lakshmana reached her hermitage. Shabari welcomed them with love. When she offered the fruits, the Ramayana says, Rama accepted them lovingly. Her long waiting was fulfilled in a moment.

This story recalls the heroine of the verse: waiting for someone so intensely that one fears to blink, and waiting itself becoming the form of love. Shabari's faith, small in the world's eyes, is very great in God's.

To reflect on

Has anyone judged a relationship of yours, or have you judged someone else's, from the small part that was visible from outside?
