Explanation

In the dark pupil at the centre of the eye, the small figure of whoever stands before us can be seen. Tamil calls it paavai, the little doll-like image standing in the eye. The lover speaks to that image: move aside, my beloved needs room here. The pupil is a tiny space where only one can stand. Because he wants his beloved to stand there, he evicts the image itself. There is mischief in this, and also love. A man who wishes to keep her within his eye itself is ready to give up a part of that eye for her.

The word paavai has two senses: the figure seen in the eye, and a young woman. He tells the image in the pupil to go, and gives room to the real paavai, his beloved. This double meaning adds special beauty to the verse. Thirunuthal is a fair forehead, a way of naming her whole person by one feature of her face. To make someone live within the eye is the highest phrase of love in Tamil, and we still say "I will keep you in my eye like a treasure."

The truth the verse brings out is that to hold someone in our heart means truly giving up a part of our own space to them. A relationship becomes real when for the sake of someone dear we make room, with our time, our attention and some of our comforts. To give room by deed and not by words alone is the excellence of love.

A story

The Eyes of Kannappa

This is the account of Kannappa Nayanar told in the Periya Puranam. Thinnan, son of Nagan, chief of the hunters who lived near the hill of Kalahasti, came upon a Shiva lingam while hunting in the forest. He knew no rituals, but when he saw the Lord his heart melted. The epic says that he brought water in his mouth to bathe the lingam, removed the flowers there with his foot, and offered the meat he had hunted.

The Brahmin Sivagocharyar, who worshipped there daily according to the rules, was distressed by what seemed to him improper acts. But the Lord appeared in his dream and told him, "I am moved by his love." One day Sivagocharyar hid and watched, and saw blood flowing from the right eye of the Lord. Thinnan applied herbs, but the bleeding would not stop.

Then Thinnan plucked out his own eye with an arrow and fixed it where the Lord's eye had been. The bleeding stopped. But blood flowed from the left eye of the Lord too. Without hesitation he prepared to pluck out his other eye. Knowing that if he became blind he would not know where to set it, he placed his sandalled foot on the Lord's eye to mark the spot. As he brought the arrow to his eye, the Lord stopped him, saying, "Kannappa, stop."

In this account the lover's language of the verse sounds as the language of love for God. To give one's very eye for the one held in the eye is love at its highest. Kannappar proved by giving a limb of his own body what it means to give place to the Lord.

Set beside ordinary life, the story shows that making room for the beloved is no grand gesture but a slow giving up of self-interest.
