Explanation

Applying kohl to the eyes is an ancient adornment among Tamil women. It is the practice to close the eyes while painting them. The heroine avoids even this. Her reason is wonderful: if she shut her eyes for that moment, the beloved within them would vanish from her sight. She does not want to be without the sight of him even for a second, so she gives up the adornment altogether. It is a delicate expression of love; the sight of him matters more to her than her own make-up.

Karappaakku arindhu means knowing his disappearance. She makes this choice knowing he would vanish. There is a fear of separation in it too, a state of mind that cannot bear to be out of his sight for even a moment. The Gopi Gita in the Bhagavata expresses the same mood. In the days when Krishna went to the forest, even the blink of an eye seemed a gap, and the gopis reproached the very creator of eyelids.

In today's world this may seem extravagant. But it is a measure of how much we value the time that those we love are near. When we are with a child, do we put the phone aside? When relatives come, do we switch off the television? To give full attention to someone is the truth of love. The heroine sacrifices even her eyelid; we can at least sacrifice distraction.

A story

The Gopis Who Blamed the Eyelid

The Bhagavata Purana describes Krishna's youth at length. When Krishna went to the forest to graze the cattle at Vrindavan, the gopis waited at home yearning for him. When they heard his flute they left their work and ran out. When he came back in the evening, dust rose like a cloud along the streets. At that hour the women gathered at their doors to see his face.

A famous verse in the Gopi Gita of the Bhagavata is what the gopis sang to Krishna: "When you go to the forest by day, even a moment stretches for us like an age. In the evening, when we see your beautiful face, we count even the closing of an eyelid, and we think the creator who made eyelids foolish, because for that one instant we cannot see you." Tradition honours the gopis' love as a rare state in which affection and devotion join.

In their daily life the usual adornments slowly faded. Painting kohl on the eyes or putting flowers in the hair no longer mattered. The thought that the chance to see Krishna's face must not be lost in any instant took hold of them. Before such love, all their ornaments grew dim.

One day Yashoda asked the gopis, "Why are you always standing at the door?" They laughed shyly. To watch the road by which Krishna would come without blinking was a joy to them.

This scene brings to mind the heroine of the verse. She who refuses kohl and the gopis who blame the eyelid share one state of mind: love that will not lose the moments of seeing. Love is always aware of the worth of presence.

To reflect on

When someone you love is with you, do you give them your undivided attention, or do small distractions steal those moments?
