Explanation

The heroine who avoided kohl for the one in her eyes now avoids the heat of food for the one in her heart. She fears that hot food, descending into the heart, might scald him who lives there. It may seem unreasonable, but deep love does not bow to reason. The feeling that others dwell in our hearts makes each of our acts careful. Each action of the heroine is decided with his welfare in view.

The verse admits two readings. One takes it as the natural exaggeration of love: she guards him as though within her. The other takes it to describe her state in separation: since he is not near, she lives with his memory as companion and with concern for him in every act. Either way she stands as an example of a mind that lives for another.

We see the feeling of this verse in families. A mother who cooks the dish her son loves while he is away, a wife who keeps a meal warm for a husband who will come late: these are forms of that love. Valluvar reminds us that the care visible in small acts is the true sign of love. Her small fear is a measure of the great love she has for him, shown even in daily acts like eating.

A story

Pongal Morning

It was the first day of Thai, before dawn. In a village near Thanjavur, Meenakshi drew kolam in her courtyard and arranged to cook pongal in a new pot. She set bricks for the hearth, placed the pot tied with a bunch of turmeric, and when the milk boiled over she called out, "Pongalo Pongal!" Her husband Murugan had been working for two months in a town across the sea. He could not come for this Pongal.

Her mother-in-law said, "Set aside pongal for your husband, and eat yourself." Meenakshi raised the first spoonful of hot pongal to her mouth. At that moment she thought of something and stopped. "Amma, let the heat cool," she said. Her mother-in-law laughed. "Girl, you have been standing by the hearth so long; didn't you feel the heat?" Meenakshi blushed.

On that morning her mind was full of Murugan. He usually ate pongal hot, and though it burned his tongue, he never stopped midway. She was always telling him, "Eat slowly." Today he was not near. She said that command to herself.

Her mother-in-law understood and her eyes filled. "He will be well, child; we will speak on the phone." In the evening, when Murugan called, Meenakshi said, "Don't eat hot food; I feel somehow afraid." Murugan laughed and said, "I hear you also waited for yours to cool." Meenakshi's eyes grew moist.

That night she took a portion of the pongal to the temple and offered it. "Wherever my husband is, may he be well," she prayed. It was the care she showed in small acts that shortened the distance.
