Explanation

In this verse the heroine uses fire to describe the pain of love. Fire burns only when you touch it; if you stay away it does not burn. But the sickness of love is not so. Even keeping away from the beloved, it burns; even at a distance it scorches. Therefore, she concludes, the sickness of love is crueller than fire.

This is an elegant reversal of a simile. Poets generally say that love is like fire. Valluvar here denies that simile and says fire cannot match it. By the word vitirsutal the burning that rises in separation is seen. The word kamanoi here carries the fuller sense of love's longing.

In our lives too, the pain given by fire subsides quickly, but the longing of the mind lasts for days. There is medicine for bodily pain; for mental pain, kind speech and hope are the medicine. Those who realise this are compassionate toward those who live apart. Fire is outside us and can be avoided by not touching it; the sickness of love rises from within, and travels with us wherever we go. The verse separates two states of burning: burning on touch and burning at a distance. Valluvar's view is that the second is the very hallmark of true love.

A story

The Burning of Kama and Rati

The Shaiva Puranas tell of the burning of Kama. To obtain a son who would defeat the demon Tarakasura, the devas sent Manmatha to stir the mind of Lord Shiva, who was in meditation. Manmatha shot his flower arrow. Shiva's forehead eye opened, and the Purana says Manmatha was burnt to ashes.

At that moment Manmatha's wife Rati arrived. Seeing her husband lying as ashes she cried out. She begged Lord Shiva to restore her husband. The tone of her plea is sung movingly in many Puranas. The Lord took pity on her grief; continuing tales say he granted that Kama would live without a body as Ananga, and later be born as Krishna's son.

In this story the fire burned the husband, but what burned Rati's mind was separation. The fire that burned the body ended in a moment; Rati's longing lasted. The heroine of the Kural says the same: fire burns only when touched, while the sickness of separation burns even at a distance.

As Puranic tales have it, Rati's sorrow was eased by the Lord's grace. This offers the comfort that love's pain is not permanent. However long the waiting, if the love is true, it has an end.

Rati's hope was not in vain. By the Lord's grace she regained her husband in another form. The tale gives the hope that the day will come when the fire of sorrow is quenched.
