Explanation

This verse places a woman's greatness in the firmness of her heart. Not beauty and not wealth, but 'karpu ennum thinmai' raises her. 'Thinmai' means firmness, a strength of mind that does not shift in any circumstance.

Older commentators including Parimelazhagar explain 'karpu' as unchanging faith and right conduct toward the husband. Valluvar is not speaking of mere outer restraint here; by the word 'thinmai' he shows it is strength of mind. In the following verses he calls the same quality 'nirai'.

Readers today usually widen it to faithfulness, honesty and strength of will. They also say this firmness must be expected of the husband too. Valluvar himself, in chapter 15, 'Not coveting another's wife', lays the same discipline on men.

'Perunthakka yaavula' is praise in the form of a question: nothing is greater than this. However many trials a family meets, this firmness is the foundation that bears them.

If that firmness comes from fear it is weakness; if it comes from love and clarity it is strength. So the verse does not praise coercion; it praises a person's own choice of heart, her steadfastness.

In the Mahabharata, Savitri stands as the finest example of this firmness. Even Yama bowed before it.

A story

Savitri Who Won Back Her Husband from Yama

In the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata, when Yudhishthira was in sorrow, the sage Markandeya tells the story of Savitri. She was the daughter of Ashvapati, king of the Madras. She went in search of her own bridegroom and chose Satyavan, who lived in the forest. He was the son of the blind king Dyumatsena, who had lost his kingdom and lived in the forest.

Narada came and warned that Satyavan, though good, would die within a year. Ashvapati was grieved. But Savitri said firmly, "The heart chooses only once. A word is spoken only once. I have already chosen Satyavan." She accepted the forest life and looked after her father-in-law and mother-in-law with love.

As the day approached she fasted for three days. On the appointed day Satyavan went into the forest to cut wood and Savitri went with him. He felt a pain in his head, lay down with his head in her lap, and breathed his last. Yama, the lord of dharma, came and drew out his soul with a noose.

Savitri followed Yama. When he told her to turn back, she spoke beautiful words on dharma. Pleased with her wisdom, Yama told her to ask for any boon except her husband's life. She asked first for her father-in-law's sight, then for his lost kingdom, then for sons for her father. At last she asked for a hundred sons for herself and Satyavan. Yama said, "So be it," even to this.

Then Savitri smiled gently: "How will sons be born without my husband?" Yama was amazed. Praising her wisdom, devotion and firmness, he released Satyavan's life.

Savitri returned with her husband. Dyumatsena's sight came back and he regained his kingdom. The tale shows that strength lies not in the sword but in the firmness of the mind.
